Accomplished athlete, skilled musician and soon-to-be Sea Captain, Senior Michael Curth’s unique background is truly inspirational. His contribution to the Knox community comes in many forms – from rowing on the crew team for the past three years to active involvement within the performing arts department – and will serve him well in his future academic career, training for leadership roles within the maritime industry.
Next year, Michael will be attending the para-military program at SUNY Maritime, where he will study Small Vessel Operations. This regimented two-year program will culminate in Michael receiving his Coast Guard license and deck licence, which will enable him to captain working vessels. His ultimate goal after graduation is to become a tugboat captain, and possibly become a pilot who will land planes on maritime vessels. His inspiration for these unique goals comes from his grandfather who is a retired U.S. Marine, and his parents who fully support his maritime ambitions.
In addition to his accomplished academics which afforded him a position at prestigious SUNY Maritime, Michael is a top-notch crew athlete. In the recent weeks,Michael won a first place gold medal at the Strong Island Sprints indoor crew competition that was held at St. Anthony’s High School. This event took place on February 10, 2018, and is known for being the largest erg competition in the tri-state region. His shining achievement was in the 1,000 meter sprint, where he crushed the competition within his weight class by over 5 seconds.
Michael’s most recent accomplishment includes being one of the six students who was inducted into the newly established Knox chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society. This national society provides unique opportunities for students who have proven to be academically capable and musically gifted, to perform within and serve their community in an effort to build confidence, creativity, critical thinking, compassion and other leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Michael’s musical ability is extensive, and includes playing guitar, bass guitar, and singing. Michael is also the President of the Knox Musicians Club, and helps to organize school performances at the Knox Coffee House and term-end recitals.
When Michael is not working hard on his studies, athletics and music, you can find him cruising the streets of his Stony Brook community on his motorcycle. His fearless efforts both at school and in life are a true example of the Knox Core Values, and we wish him much success in his future endeavors.
